Most of the reservoir is still ice-covered. Best viewing is from the public area near Bridge #1 (remember that this part of Loch Raven Drive closes Sat. and Sun. 10-5).

Bridge #1 (with Taylor McLean) 7:30- 8:15 AM
Coot-- about 400
Common Merg-- 150+
Red-breasted Merg-- 3
Redhead-- about 20
Am. Wigeon-- about 20
Pied-billed Grebe-- 3
Bufflehead-- 5
Mallard-- 8
Ring-necked Duck-- a few
Herring Gull-- 1
I did not count the Canada Geese or Ring-billed Gulls.

With all the excitement about Redheads around the state, it's worth mentioning that 20 Redheads at Loch Raven is not unusual in the winter.

Before heading home, I stopped at the trail leading to the old picnic area to look for landbirds. Best finds were 2 Pileated Woodpeckers.
