This morning I made my "annual" trip to Piscataway Park in the
southwestern corner of Prince George’s County.
My first stop was at "Farmington Landing" on Piscataway Creek, at
the end of Wharf Road, off of Farmington Road. The main attraction
here was a group of 40+ Canvasbacks. I also saw a good number of
scaup - mostly Lesser but a few Greater as well - spread out over
the creek. There were also a couple dozen large white lumps
(sleeping Tundra Swans) on the far shore.
After that I went to the "Accokeek Creek" section of the park, on
the Potomac, the same area described by Dave Brenneman in his
recent posting. There were a large number of waterfowl visible
from the boardwalk, out in the river (if you go, it really helps to have
a scope). Here Ring-necked Ducks were the most common species
by far (probably 200+). Other notables, in roughly decreasing order
of abundance were as follows:
Common Merganser
scaup spp.
Bufflehead
Gadwall
American Coot - 24+
American Wigeon - 20+
REDHEAD - 14
Canada Goose - a few
Mallard - 2
Bald Eagle - 2 subadults
I also saw a good-sized grebe, very far out in the river, that
MIGHT have been a Red-necked. Due to the distance and the
heat shimmer off the water, I couldn't get a positive ID.
Nonetheless, I was happy to get some sought-after year birds.
