In terms of unusual feeder birds, my resident hermit thrush has become a
regular visitor at the feeder, but has developed a different approach from
the kinglets described by others. It watches the suet feeder and whenever
a woodpecker is on the suet cake, it flies to the ground underneath, eating
the pieces dropped by the woodpeckers. It has tried eating directly from
the suet cakes, but, of course, its head is not equipped for pounding on
frozen suet. It also comes to the deck rail to eat chopped up
grapes. Unfortunately, the squirrels have discovered that they also like
chopped up grapes, so it's hard to keep grapes available. It will eat some
seeds as well, appearing to prefer millet, but I have seen it eating
sweetgum seeds off the ground. This has been going on for several weeks now.
