Repeated my walk of last Saturday, but in the reverse direction.
Also walked the towpath from Sycamore Landing to Horsepen Branch. Water
levels are much lower, so it was easier to see waterfowl on the Potomac.
Respectable day with 48 species. Arrivals were 4 Gadwall and 2 Wilson's
Snipe. Ring-necked Ducks continue to increase with 319 (only 50 females).
They are now mostly in the large impoundment,so it is hard to get an
accurate count. A female Bufflehead here was also unusual. Tree Swallows
seemed to have survived the bitter cold weather and are perching on their
nest boxes.
Other highlights were 40 Am. Wigeons, 28 Green-winged Teal, 43 Lesser
Scaup, 35 Bufflehead, 3 Common Goldeneyes, 8 Hooded Mergansers, 18 Common
Mergansers, one Red-headed Woodpecker, 2 Eastern Phoebes, 5 Winter Wrens,
and a Rusty Blackbird.
