Thanks for bringing up this issue. Several years  ago, many bluebirds were 
found dead in tree tubes around chestnut  seedlings at the American Chestnut 
Land Trust. I think of this whenever I see  tree tubes.
 
The webbing that covers the tubes is like the material in which onions are  
sometimes sold, a plastic mesh.
