I can remember when the only extra resource I had in my quest for new birds
was the Vermont Institute of Natural Science rare bird alert phone number -
no e-mail lists, no internet, and I always went afield alone because I
didn't know any better. I took to heart the words in my first field guides
(Peterson's, Audubon) about birding etiquette and what not to do when
observing birds during the breeding season, or when to not disclose the
location(s) of rare or endangered species. It made sense to me then and it
still does. I view birding as an extension of my interests in natural
history; it has nothing to do with listing and everything to do with the
wonder of life and birds.

So I guess I just don't understand why we have to keep telling birders what
not to do.

Good call, Norm.
