Now that spring is here (by the calendar) it seemed appropriate to check
the status of the birds at a few of the viewing sites around Talbot County.
First stop was a view of the Miles River from beside the Unionville Road
bridge.
    Miles River/Unionville Rd Birds:
Double-crested Cormorant - 10 (including some for which the 'double
crests' could actually be very clearly seen)
        Mallard - 2
        Lesser Scaup - 12
Ruddy Duck - 50+ at a fair distance down stream
Osprey - a pair using power pole nest platform north of the bridge

Second stop was a view of the Miles River from the perspective of a spot
slightly east of St. Michaels.
    Miles River Birds -
        Surf Scoter - many
        Bufflehead - several
        Lesser Scaup - several
        Goldeneye - 1
        Common Loon - 2
        Horned Grebe - 2

Third stop was a view of the Chesapeake Bay from the parking lot of Lowe's
Wharf near Sherwood.
    Lowe's Wharf Birds:
        Great Blue Heron - 1

Fourth stop was at the fisherman's parking lot near Black Walnut Point.

Fifth stop was at Tilghman Park just north of the Knapps Narrows Bridge.
      Tilghman Park birds:
        Brown Thrasher
        American Robin - several
        Downy Woodpecker
        Northern Cardinal - several
        Ruby-crowned Kinglet - 1
        White-throated Sparrow - several
        Dark-eyed Junco - 2

And finally - back home on Leeds Creek - Bluebirds going in and out of a
house, Osprey pair in the area, Bald Eagle proudly roosting along the
driveway, Brown Thrasher, Towhees (up to seven on the day it snowed a couple
of weeks ago), lots of White-throats and Juncos, Carolina Wren, Song
Sparrow, many Goldfinches and several House Finches, Mallards scarfing
birdseen beneath some of the feeders, Black Vultures on trees in the yard,
Robins, Blue Jays, a Mockingbird, Starlings carrying nesting material,
Tufted Titmice and Carolina Chickadees. And, yes, too many Brown-headed
Cowbirds.
On Leeds Creek - one Mute Swan, 16 Canada Geese, numerous Mallards, 12
Lesser Scaup and one Great Blue Heron. A pair of Hooded Mergansers stopped
in momentarily a few days ago.

Still waiting for more spring-time birds.
