On our way home I heard from Paul Pisano that he was
watching three White-winged Scoters near the mouth of
the Anacostia River, at some considerable distance
from his location in East Potomac Park. He very
kindly and patiently waited for me while I hopped into
my car and plodded all the way down Piney Branch Road,
13 Street, Arkansas Avenue, AND Beach Drive behind
someone who actually drives slower on those roads than
I do (!). Hearing Molotov's "Frijolero" on the radio
made up for the delay, however.
I arrived to find Paul watching the scoters swim
slowly down the Anacostia toward him/us. The birds
looked to me to be two immature males and a young
female. He had to leave immediately, but I watched
the birds for about 15 minutes. I failed to locate
the Laughing, Lesser Black-backed, and Bonaparte's
Gulls he had earlier seen.
Since there were still many minutes before sunset, I
hopped over the the Littlest County in the great
un-named land to the south. I think I was there too
late to hear the meadowlark that he had heard around 3
pm or so. I may have seen the Savannah Sparrow he
found, but the view I had was not definitive. I plan
on sneaking out of Maryland DC tomorrow morning to
look for both species.
Cheers,
Roberto Hilton M.
