I was hoping to see or hear a Yellow-throated Warbler today. That
didn't happen, but I was moderately surprised to hear the Louisiana
Waterthrush singing at the usual place along Kingsley Trail. I've never
before seen or heard him before April.
Later in the AM, I tried Owl Ridge Trail (n. LB), which I had not done
for over 10 years, because I never seemed to see many birds there. That
was true today also, but there was one bird that puzzled me. High in
the first (northernmost) pine grove, I saw a bird with bright yellow
throat, breast, and belly, a white vent, and gray wings. There was no
obvious streaking, etc. (but I probably can't rule out faint streaking,
as on a first winter Magnolia Warbler). I was almost directly under the
bird, so I couldn't see much else, but it turned its head slightly to
the side momentarily, and I think I saw both yellow and black on its
face (but couldn't see a pattern). Blue-wing Warbler seems like the
closest match, but I wouldn't expect that to be high in deep woods. The
habitat is also wrong for the first winter Magnolia. Pine Warbler
matches the habitat best, but I think there was too much yellow on the
bird I saw, and the yellow was too bright. Unfortunately, the bird was
not vocalizing. Any other suggestions?
