Question about Crow behavior

The note below came to me recently from one of our Talbot Bird Club members,
and it asks for comments about Crow group behavior -- comments that get well
beyond my pay grade.  Has someone else noticed such group behavior in Crows
- or even studied up on is so as to offer an explanation?

Les:  ...Crows are interesting to me. For the past few weeks I 
have seen  a flock of about 20 moving about making very soft calls.  I have 
read that territories are occupied by clans  not pairs, and that they cover 
a large area.  Can you explain this group behavior to me?   Regards    Jim
