I thought the Prince George's County Painted Bunting was going to make
just a single visit. I hoped it would return regularly allowing me to
post its schedule. But, as always, reality takes the middle road. Now,
after three days and *way* too much time spent waiting for its return
(since the first sighting, I spent less than 2 hours of daylight away
from the site, though not all of that time was full-time, serious
watching), I can report 5 sightings as follows:

March 31 10:02 -- present for about ten seconds
April 1 10:10 -- flyby
April 1 12:15 -- present for about 5 minutes
April 1 3:15 -- present for about 5 minutes
April 2 9:40 -- flyby

The two flybys would hardly count as evidence of the bird's presence if
it weren't for the other three sightings. At 3:15, I managed a couple
of pictures which I posted

Logistics for seeing this bird are difficult. Assuming all 5 sightings
are legit, it works out to something like one sighting for every 5 hours
watching. Those are not good odds, particularly since three of those
sightings were far from satisfactory. Also, there is no place inside
with a good view of the feeders and although it seems to tolerate me
walking around the yard, I don't know how it will respond to a mob of
people milling around and I'm not particularly interested in finding
out. However, the yard is big and a couple of people at a time will
probably be okay. So if you have *way* too much free time (or you are
feeling lucky), you are welcome to contact me to set up a chance to give
it a shot.

and good luck,

Dave

P.S. For anyone interested in attracting their own Painted Bunting,
this bird seems to prefer safflower to sunflower seeds.
