The population in the state is doing quite well and Anne Arundel County is
no exception. I think the breeding bird atlas will show that they are now
established in every county. I'm can't say about Baltimore City. There are
certainly turkeys living there, they're just not necessarily the avian
variety.

I would be surprised if the Davidsonville ones were not wild birds, more
than if they were. The birds have even moved onto the grounds of BWI Airport
in Anne Arundel over the last several years. They usually don't last long
there because the state in their efforts to prevent aircraft traveling at
high speeds from hitting these 20 pound birds 'takes them out' as quickly as
they can. This is a shame but they have a very bad habit of hanging out on
the edges of the runways, sometimes actually displaying in the middle of the
runway. I have actually seen one Tom that, in defending his newly claimed
territory, would actually chase the departing aircraft down the runway and
return to do the same for each succeeding departure. As soon as the state
would send someone out in a vehicle to take care of the situation, the bird
would head for the woods before the truck could get within 1/4 mile. Sly
little buggers, they are.

Kevin, I would make the same assumption about the birds that you had near
Rocks State Park. The habitat there is perfect for the species. There's no
reason that I can think of to believe that they aren't doing as well in
sections of Harford as they are in the rest of the state.
