MD Osprey:

Between 8 and 11 pm on Wednesday (4/18), Paul O'Brien and I tried for
the Yellow Rails that Paul Bystrack and others found on Friday night
on Rumbly Point Road in Somerset County, MD. Even though Wednesday
was the first clear night since Friday, the birds did not respond, in
fact the marsh was extremely quiet. We ran across Jim Brighton and
Mike Walsh and had fun responding to each other's tapes!

All that Paul and I heard in the marsh were:

1 Virginia Rail
1 Pied-billed Grebe
1 Barn Own
2 Black-crowned Night-Herons

Jim and Mike added 1 large rail, sp.

So, either the rails took off sometime during the inclement/windy
conditions or lifted off at dusk on Wednesday ...???

I believe the peak date for MD Yellow Rail reports is Apr 24, so keep
trying. Maybe we need to run a simultaneous canvass of Rumbly Point
Road and Elliot Island Road, with cell phone connectivity?

Phil
