I looked for the painted bunting for about an hour from about 1:35-2:40, with
no luck. I spent most of the time around the mature trees (cedar, magnolia,
spruce, hackberry, maple) and grounds at the church (by Darnell's Chance),
where it was last observed (heading toward there, from the CAB grounds/
Schoolhouse Pond).
Armed with their song fresh in my memory (from a disc, of course), I set about
listening and looking. It was noisy but not really very birdy, in general. There
was an incessant amount of song from goldfinches, that sounds fairly similar
(in part) to the rambling of a bunting, but it was so constant around the
evergreens there it made it difficult to hear other song.
I had nothing noteworthy really, mostly local birds. Perhaps it will show up
again soon.
