I went over to Poplar Point this morning to look for the birds that Rob
Hilton reported yesterday. I failed to find any Grasshopper Sparrows,
unfortunately. I did see the LEAST BITTERN, the AMERICAN BITTERN, (two)
WILSON'S SNIPE, and a WILD TURKEY, more or less in the places that Rob
reported. I saw both bitterns and the snipe in flight after they had
flushed ahead of me. The turkey was walking in and out of the tall
grass, and did not seem to be disturbed by my presence.

Though I missed Grasshopper Sparrow, I saw a number of other sparrows:
two Savannah Sparrows, two Field Sparrows (one singing), and a Swamp
Sparrow. A female Kestrel was hunting on the median near the pumphouse.
In addition, I saw a few first of the spring birds: Eastern Kingbird,
Baltimore Oriole, Chestnut-sided Warbler, Yellow Warbler, and House Wren.

As I walked along the river from Poplar Point towards Anacostia Park
proper, a BOBOLINK flushed from the taller grass, perched in the shrubs,
and started singing. On the river itself, there were about seven Caspian
Terns and two Osprey.

The Least Bittern and Wild Turkey were #199 and #200 on my DC life list.
