Yesterday, Lisa Wilson and myself counted at the Elk Neck State Forest
and was rewarded with excellent birding. Birds of note: Orange-crowned
Warbler, Bay-breasted, both black-throated warblers in quantity,
Magnolia, Black & White in quantity, Blackpoll, Worm-eating, Ovenbird in
quantity, Swainson's Thrush, Verry.
Late in the morning we came upon an inch worm hatching. Inch worms all
over and of many species. Ten on my shit & hat at once. The birds were
taking full advantage, feasting on inchworms. Mostly Cedar Waxwings &
Yellow-rumped, but also many of those noted above. It was difficult to
identify all the birds, there were so many. The Cedar Waxwings were
actually fat. They appeared swelled-up and not the usual sleek bird.
Some seemed to have extended stomachs (i.e. beer guts).
