We started at Old Legislative Road just south of
Klondike Road this morning. We heard and saw a male
GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER, but no Henslow's Sparrows, in
our 90 minute + stay. The warbler was maddeningly
furtive, but everyone except me eventually saw it
through binoculars. It did sing a lot over the course
of the final 45 minutes we were at the site. Other
birds of interest (to me at least) were singing and
calling Bobolinks, and an Orchard Oriole.

After eating in Frostburg, we visited the Dans Rock
overlook, which contains a fine collection of rock
carvings and paintings. John Hubbeel had tipped us
off to the presence of a certain declining warbler
species near the overlook. By now it was noon, so
birds weren't too active, but we did hear a
Black-and-White Warbler. On our way off the mountain,
we stopped to admire a singing and visible Cerulean
Warbler. Said declining warbler species could be
heard over the din of the departing motorcyclists, who
had added a certain je ne sais quoi to the graffiti at
the top of the rocks of Dan.

Next stop: Maryland's westernmost county. Acting on
another tip from John Hubbell, we headed toward
Russell Road in Garrett County. Once we actually
located the road, we drove up and up, entering a mine
area (luckily not a mine field). One of his NORTHERN
MOCKINGBIRDS flew across the road, but didn't stay
close to it for long. While trying to find it, we
were serenaded by two Vesper Sparrows, a Horned Lark,
and some Common Ravens.

It was time to head back home. But not before
stopping at North Branch and seeing the Red-necked
Phalarope, another John Hubbell Tip (tm).

Quite a nice day, a little hotter and drier initially
predicted.
