This morning, I had what I took to be a Willow Flycatcher calling from near the end of the boardwalk at Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens. It was flying back and forth between bushes mixed with cattails in the marsh, and a taller tree on land nearby. It was doing its RITZ-pew thing, and looked exactly like the 1st year bird pictured in Sibley's.
But back at the office, I listened to the sound of Willow and Alder flycatchers, and found them pretty similar, to my amateur ear at least.
Is there anyway to establish ID based on habitat and time of year?
Many thanks
