Hi Tom, Dave, and everyone --

The two scenarios posed by Dave are indeed good possibilities.

Another possibility is that these are second year (SY in banding lingo)
birds that are on territory late for various reasons -- territory suddenly
vacant due to death of the "owner", substandard territory being filled
late by SY bird, etc. SY birds are usually the last to arrive and good
habitat is frequently taken. It may then take them time to find a
territory that is available. SY or subadult birds get whatever territory
is left after the older birds have established theirs. Early June isn't
too late to establish a territory and attempt a nesting. Although the
migration this year seemed to be normal, these birds could also be late
migrants just arriving and setting up territories or "hanging out" on the
periphery of the territories of other birds with the chance of getting
that territory if something happens to its owner. I do one of my Breeding
Bird Surveys (BBS) on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend (in Charles
County) when possible and occasionally get late migrants, such as
Blackpoll or Trail's Flycatcher so birds are still moving. This year, BTW,
we had no migrants.

Just another thought ..................

Cheers,
Kathy
