On Sunday, I did a little birding around northern Anne
Arundel after dropping Jane off at BWI. Stan Arnold
and Bill Hubick had given me some pointers which were
spot on.

First, I stopped at Pond 10 in Patapsco Valley SP
(take exit 8 from 695 then east on Nursery Rd. then
north onto Barkwood and drive to the back). Without
even getting out of the car, I heard a singing
WARBLING VIREO. It was joined by another. Further east
on Nursery is Pond 11 where there was another WAVI.

I stopped at Ft. Smallwood and checked out the pond on
the east side of the park. There was a pair of LEAST
TERNS that flew in off the Bay. A pair of CATTLE
EGRETS flew in but spooked when they saw me. In the
shallow end of the pond on the NE corner was an
immature BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON. On the south side
of the pond was a singing male PROTHONOTARY WARBLER,
and a male BALTIMORE ORIOLE chasing a grackle. Another
white heron-egret flew over the pond without landing.
It was a white-phase LITTLE BLUE HERON. As I was
leaving the park, I found another singing WAVI on the
NW side of the park.

Warbling Vireo seems to be easy in northern Anne
Arundel. Send some down to Calvert and St. Mary's for
next years' SMAS Birdathon and May Count, please!

Wednesday evening, Jane returned to BWI having circled
Philly during the storm passage. On the way south, on
I-97 on the SW side of the intersection with
Quarterfield Rd. there was a pair of CATTLE EGRETS in
the "pond" there. I thought I had seen either a Cattle
Egret or a Snowy Egret there on Sunday but didn't get
a decent look due to heavy traffic.
