Hi Everyone,

My girlfriend Becky and I paddled up Rock Creek from White's Pond to Wall Cove this morning. We enjoyed the cool breeze and mild temperature; the tide was the highest during which we've paddled so far. After checking out Wall Cove and its marinas, we worked back and dropped our kayaks in the pond at the west end of Weinberg Park. After drifting here lazily for a while, we ran into Dave Perry on our way out and had a nice chat about local birds. We were pleased to hear that he'd had a calling NORTHERN BOBWHITE at Greenbury Point this morning. Here are some kayaking observations.

Rock Creek:

DC Cormorant--2
Great Blue Heron--3
Great Egret--1
Cattle Egret--2
Turkey Vulture--1
Osprey--8
Herring Gull--1

Weinberg Pond:

Great Blue Heron--1
Black-crowned Night-Heron--1 adult
Eastern Kingbird--1
Barn Swallow--3
American Crow--5 (less common than Fish Crow here, as one would expect)
White-eyed Vireo--calling; my first at Weinberg
Red-eyed Vireo--2
Song Sparrow--1
Blue Grosbeak--1
Indigo Bunting--2

Odes: Spreadwing sp., probable Blue-ringed Dancer, Fragile Forktail, Common (Eastern) Pondhawk, Slaty Skimmer, Blue Dasher, Black Saddlebags.

Recent yard observations:

Chuck-will's-widow--2 calling from Weinberg last night (6/15) at 9:50
Brown Thrasher--1-2 present constantly; almost certainly nesting near the back of our yard
Cedar Waxwings--started thinning out this week
Song Sparrow--1 started feeding in our yard routinely this week
Common Grackles--parents feeding fledged young all this week
Orchard Oriole--still heard singing daily
Giant Leopard Moth--Very cool moth that Becky found: http://billhubick.com/photos/insects/giant_leopard_moth.html

Enjoy the weekend!
