Sorry for late posting. Steve Sanford was the resident evil genius guiding the new
kid on the block, Peter Lev, into the arcane art of birding in Allegheny and Garrett
counties, with yours truly the recording secretary. Target birds were Golden-
winged Warbler and Henslow's Sparrow. Got the Henslow's (Peter had a four
foot confrontation) but whiffed on the Golden, in spite of the six or so "sweet
spots" Steve had mapped out from previous excursions. Still, with a total species
count of 81, including 19 warblers , it wasn't too shabby. Only 5 or so were in
good view, including killer looks of Chestnut-sided, Blackburnian and Chat. Other
notables included: Purple Finch; Rose-breasted Grosbeak (heard only); Savannah
and Grasshopper Sparrows; Great-crested, Least (heard only) and Alder Fly-
catchers; Y-B Cuckoo; Cooper's Hawk (myself only); and Wild Turkey.

We failed to spot either the Baltimore or Harris' Checkerspot at Finzel Swamp,
even tho' they were fairly numerous the previous Saturday. A familiar looking
photographer returning to his car said he'd seen the Baltimore. Odenates were
basically a no-show. The total species seen/heard* follow:
