Hi Folks,

Elaine and I had a 2:30 wake-up this morning to head down to Charles Co. to
look for nightjars, and of course try to see the AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN that
was reported there. It was there along the sandbar at Morgantown at 8:30
a.m., but not initially seen, as it liked to put its head down and was
difficult to pick out among the gulls when all that showed was its butt-end.
Nevertheless, it eventually cooperated, and gave us some excellent views.
It has a huge tab on its upper bill, that looks like the dorsal fin on a
fish. Apparently this is an idication that it is in breeding plumage
(Sibley illustrates this).

We were successful at finding Whip-poor-wills along Maryland Point Rd.
around 4:30, but found no chucks anywhere around Nanjemoy. Other birds seen
or heard around Nanjemoy in the early morning hours were Yellow-throated
Vireo, Warbling Vireo (Purse SP), RE Vireo, N. Parula (widespread),
Yellow-throated Warbler (Holly Springs Rd.), Pine Warbler, Black-and-white
Warbler, Ovenbird, Hooded Warbler (Hancock Run & Adams Willet Roads), Chat
(Sandy Point Rd.), Grasshopper Sparrow (Holly Springs Rd. at farm with open
fields), and Baltimore Oriole (Hancock Run Rd.).

Many thanks to George Jett for posting on the pelican and nightjars, and
providing me with some specifics on birds we were looking for.
