Hi all,
Nancy, Alli and I are getting settled in our new home in southern Carroll
County. The huge pile of boxes (between 150 and 200!) is now just an enormous
pile. Things are beginning to get put away. What a huge collection of stuff
after 21 years in Ashton.

Anyway, I have a few seed feeders put up around the side garden and a few
hummingbird feeders as well. My yard list is now over 40, not bad for this time
of year and the fact we've only been here a couple of weeks. I have an
interesting behavior to relate, and wondered if anyone else has ever seen anything
like this. The other day (Saturday afternoon, I think) I was outside
watching the feeders, when I saw a flycatcher come into the yard and land on feeder
pole. My first thought was it must be a phoebe, but it looked different. I
didn't have my bins, so went in to get them. After I came back out the bird was
gone but came back shortly. Then it began the "odd behavior". It started
chasing a female House Finch all over the yard. When the finch would come to the
feeder, the flycatcher would fly out after it, chasing until it was out of
the area. Very unusual. The flycatcher would then return to one of the poles,
perching on top. It looked like an E. Wood Pewee, and when I finally got it in
my bins, it cinched the ID by giving a loud "PEEAWEE" from the pole top. All
this occurred within about 15-20 feet of the house, out in the wide open and
at least 150 yards from the woods where I regularly hear the pewee. Anybody
ever see or watch a pewee do this?

I've never seen a pewee this far from woods and chasing another bird at
feeders before. It was rather bizarre!

More to come from Woodbine,
Rick Sussman
