You don't get an appreciation for how loud a Cooper's Hawk is until it
surprises you with its' vocal skills at a range of about 10-15'. The bird
was just on the other side of a large bush from me when it pulled this
stunt. I think I probably surprised it while it was either still eating or
had just killed something back there. It was probably complaining about the
interruption. I haven't heard them vocalize all that often and wasn't even
sure what it was until it took off right over my shoulder. They look a bit
big at that distance, too.
A close encounter like that definitely gets your attention. I also heard
a Hooded Warbler, a Veery and got a close look at a pair of Yellowthroats,
an Ovenbird, a Wood Thrush and a Black-winged Red Bird. At least I think
that's its' name. Sure is pretty.
