Saturday(6-30) I came out to McKee-Beshers WMA in Montgomery Co to look
for nesting Blue Grosbeaks (no luck) and found the first sign of fall- the
gathering of pre-migratory Northern Rough-winged Swallows on the wiresalong
River Road. Although they nest in the general area they don't nest at
McKee-Beshers(no habitat). Rough-wings are a MIMO species- the migrate
before they molt which accounts in part for their early departure.
Driving in I found 10 on the wires and another one when I walked along
River Road looking for the grosbeaks. When I left there were 53. One of
the interesting things I have found over the years is that they seem to
congregate at certain areas, avoiding other seemly similar areas. Today they
were about 1/2 way between the intersection of River & Hunting Quarter Rd
and River and Hughes Rd.
