A family of COOPER"S HAWKS has again fledged successfully in Darnestown on Springfield Road, for the fifth spring in memory. I heard the young ones yammering in the treeline a few doors up from my house. A few days before that the male and female parents were in my yard. Last year the two young came to my yard right after fledging and were the source of much comic interest as they learned to fly and hunt. Not unlike my own two young ones in their late teenage years, these young hawks were capable of flying far from the nest, prior to being capable of supporting themselves, and so they called their parents frequently and insistently and piteously for assistance and sustenance; the parents dutifully worked all day long catching stuff and bringing it to them. during this four-day period, the songbirds in the yard were totally unafraid of the young hawks and proceeded about their feeder business in plain view. And not unlike my two young, one day the young hawks were suddenly gr
own up, living on their own far from the nest, forging their own way in the world and calling much less frequently. The recent loss of my own mother makes me appreciate how much our parents have done for us, much of which we never even knew...
Good birding!
