Since it looks like few people were out birding today (or at least
reporting), I thought I'd pass along a few sightings from DC. This morning
I went to the Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens and Kenilworth Park. It's peak
lily blooming season at KAG, so the place had many photographers there by
the time I arrived. So there was no sign of a Yellow-crowned Night-Heron
around the ponds, the beginning of the River Walk, or the boardwalk. Birds
of note were 4+/- GREAT EGRETS (numbers are growing) and 2 SPOTTED
SANDPIPERS.

Perhaps more interesting is DC's closest thing to a turf farm - a brand new
ball playing field at the beginning of Kenilworth Park. It's now being well
irrigated to get the grass growing, and looks very attractive to shorebirds.
Present today were 22 KILLDEER, 3 LEAST SANDPIPERS, and 1 SEMIPALMATED
SANDPIPER. If a Buff-breasted was going to show up in DC, this is where it
would drop in, in my opinion. Definitely worth monitoring.

Now if only that Red-cockaded Woodpecker reported from Annandale would fly a
little to the east.

Good birding,
