Sue,
If weight plays any role in your decision of which lens to buy, Canon
has a 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS lens which weighs about half as much
as the 100-400 (1.6 lb vs 3 lbs, according to the specs on the B&H
site). I like it very much, although of course 300mm is limiting for
small birds (but if I had a 400 I'm sure I would want a 500 or
600...). For macro, the 100 mm f2.8 is very good in my opinion.
