For macro, the 100 mm f2.8 is very good in my

I really like this lens. My pics at the f16 aperature setting were soft
with the 180 F3.5 L. The 100 is not an "L" (professional luxury grade)
lens, but its very sharp at F11, and its $700 cheaper. Many prefer the 180,
but due to its weight, it often needs a tripod, and the focusing is not as
fast as the 100. Serious macro photography often needs a tripod, but its
easier to grab a shot with the 100 2.8. Nikon has a macro with vibration
reduction. I would recommend a true macro, one that gives a one to one life
size image. That is, if you had a half inch bug, you could take a picture
with a film camera, and on the slide the bug would be a half inch long.
The 100 and 180 give you more working distance between, versus a 50 or 60mm,
so you are less apt to spook a bug.
