While sitting on my bucket on my observation deck behind my house this morning (1 aug, 2007), I saw 2 medium-sized birds flying south from the northern end of my view of southern Jug Bay. A binocular look got my attention immediately because of the large white wing patches they were flashing. I got the scope on them immediately, cranked it up to 60X and saw right away that both birds were BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING DUCKS !!!! Unlike the last time I saw one here, these birds kept going south and never circled or landed or called. Also, unlike last time, the lighting was absolutely perfect.
For the records committee, here's what I saw: Both birds flew with necks and feet extended (the feet well beyond the tails). Feet were very pink, bill was reddish, face was gray with a hint of eye-ring, underparts jet black, upper wing surface black on the primaries with brilliant white stripes running the length of the wings. I watched at 60X (leica scope) from 7:06 to 7:07 a.m.
