Last night at 3:40 am I was astounded to hear a Whip-poor-will call from
our yard in urban S. Bowie. This is only the 3rd time in 28 years this
has happened; the other 2 times being during spring and fall migration
respectively. Today is only Aug 1, and the nearest breeding population
is ~ 12 miles away at the PWRC North Tract (formerly Ft Meade), so I can
only suppose a failed breeedeer was heading south early. The moon was
just past full and visible but low due to its current phase in the
Metonic Cycle. The bird called only twice or thrice before thinking
better of it.
