Folks

I stopped by Skimmer Island on Friday on the way to the aborted Lewes, DE pelagic trip. The highlight was two Black Skimmers flying by Skimmer Island. They never stopped, so I had no change to photograph them. These two birds are the first skimmers I have seen in Maryland in almost two years.

I don't get to the coast too often but this species no longer nests on the island. Probably due to the Herring Gulls that have taken over their nesting habitat. They are no longer a gimmie. Enjoy them when you see them, and hope something can be done to protect the skimmer habitat from the bully Herring Gulls that moved in because we put too much waste in our landfills.

I watched both birds skim the water like synchronized swimmers with lower mandible just under the surface. They zigged and zagged like a perfectly tuned sin wave. I continued to watched as they disappeared from my view. That is one image I will just have to remember.
