Hi All,
I'm just sending out a notification email and will let the gang in
Cabell/Putnam county sending out more specifics on the how the
bird was found, the sequence of events, etc.
A Great Knot was found at one of the Winfield Lock's and Dam
ponds late Monday morning. Other birders from that area visited
the site during the rest of the day. There was a lot of conversation
on what it could be (thus the delay) and I received some pictures
from Wendell Argabrite late Monday night. My initial impression
was a molting juvenile Ruff but we needed some more opinions
from birders with more experience.
I posted an email to the birding ID-Frontiers listserv last night and
so far have received overwhelmingly support for a Great Knot.
As far as I can tell this is the only record east of the west coast but
more research needs to be done in that area.
The bird was NOT relocated on Tuesday. If it is relocated we'll get that
information out FAST.
Here are the photos taken late Monday morning:

It's amazing that two Knot species have been in the state this year
( Red being the other ) Both if accepted would be first state records.
On a personal note Wendell and I saw our lifer Great Knot at Gambell
this past June. A photo of that bird is here:
