I walked about 1/2 mile up and back Powells Run Road (Western
Baltimore Co) this morning including both the open field area and the
deep woods. It was all remarkably birdless and bugless. No Prairie
Warbler. No Chat. No Yellow Warbler. No orioles. No sparrow of any
sort. Only one Indigo Bunting. Only one species of Woodpecker --
Red-bellied.
BUT, I did see a brilliant male Blue Grosbeak. I would think this is a
migrant since it's the first I ever recall seeing there, even though
the habitat is pretty appropriate. Based on hearing many sharp chips,
there may actually have been several of them. On the other hand, the
Yellow Book shows them as pretty late-departing migrants.
