I just got word from a caller about a "mystery" bird looking like a cardinal, complete with red bill, but a gray head and no crest. We're getting to that season again - soon we'll be getting those questions about bald cardinals and whether there's a disease or mites infestation going on. The birds are actually going through a molt of body feathers, and characteristically, many of the adult males and even some females seem to molt all of their head feathers at about the same time, leaving them temporarily partly or even fully bald until the new feathers grow in.
