I visited Hains Pt this morning too, but it must have been before Gary &
Frank came through because the gate was still closed when I got there. I
didn't stick around, because there's no rhyme or reason on when they open
that gate. So I drove up the Anacostia, and found the following:

2-3 Forster's Terns along the Anacostia River Park (my first for the fall)
2 Caspian Terns along the Anacostia River Park (my first for the fall)
Lots of Laughing Gulls flying upriver (couldn't find a Franklin's)
1 Semipalmated Plover in the wet field at Kenilworth Park (finally something
other than Killdeer)
c.20 Least Sandpipers in the wet field at Kenilworth Park (again, finally
something other than Killdeer)

The plover took off at my arrival, but 2 were there yesterday in the late
morning hot sun. The Leasts were almost all juvs, incredibly brightly
colored birds.

Also of note, I had an adult female Merlin at Hains Pt on Aug. 31st in the
past year or two (don't have the details at hand). Interesting that one
will show up there again at almost the same time, and yet so early in the
fall migration for this species. I won't see them there with regularity
until mid- to late October, when the wintering birds settle in.

Good birding,
