It will be interesting to see how the results of this count compare to the
counts at Turkey point, 8 miles SE of there.

Subject: [MDOSPREY] A Broad-winged Hawk Project at Havre De Grace

As the peak Broad-winged Hawk migration season approaches, a group of
hawk-watchers
from the Baltimore area hope to answer a question that has long had us
wondering.
Looking
at the data from several area hawk-watch sites(TURKEY POINT, Md.- ROSE TREE
PARK ,Pa.
and CROMWELL VALLEY PARK,Md.) it appears that most of the BW Hawks avoid the

Chesapeake Bay by flying south-west and roughly following the Interstate 95
corridor. We
believe that large numbers of these raptors may hug the coast and cross the
Susquehana
River near Havre De Grace.
Begining around Sept. 15th, 2007, a small group of us from the CROMWELL
VALLEY PARK
HAWKWATCH will begin counting hawks at Havre De Grace to see if our theory
is true.
We
will be counting from the LOCK HOUSE MUSEUM which is located at the base of
the Rt 40
bridge near Susquehana State Park. We hope to be here at least several days
until Sept.
25th.
We invite anyone who is interested to join us, especially those Harford
County birders
who may have some insight as to this question. I plan on posting our results
daily here on
MDOSPREY. Please feel free to contact me concerning precise dates and times.
