Still seems to be a void of warblers around here (Jug Bay area/Croom), but on
Wednesday (Aug 29) I had my first fall BLUE-WING TEAL (4) and NORTHERN
HARRIER (1, HY). Also, a pair of Mute Swans are hanging out now on the PG
side about half way between Jackson and Selby's Landings. On Thursday eve
I had a SCREECH OWL briefly out back at about 8:30 pm. It was probably
dispersing from somewhere else. They are so scarce here in PG now, we often
miss them on the May, fall, and winter counts here, so its pretty exciting
when one is found. On Friday I saw 2 fly-by flocks of BOBOLINKS (52) and a
COMMON NIGHTHAWK (1).
On Saturday morning (Sep 1) I went to the PG landfill to look for migrant
shorebirds and passerines. Before I left, I heard Bobolinks flying around over
the house, and saw a small group flying south, and an early SHARP-SHINNED
HAWK (1) was in the front yard. I was at the landfill for 2 hours; I spent
about 30 minutes looking around the SWM ponds and the rest (1.5 hrs) looking
for warblers etc in several ideal brushy and scrubby areas. The only
shorebirds were Greater (1) and Lesser Yellowlegs (1), and Killdeer (2). The
same Snowy Egret (1) and Little Blue Heron (1) were still there, with a few
Great Egrets (3). The highlight at the ponds were GREEN-WINGED TEAL (9)
and BOBOLINKS (77!; 3 different groups of 24,2,51). I found no migrant
warblers, or any migrant vireos, flycatchers, or other notable passerines. I
was surprised and disappointed, the weather was very favorable, but it was
eerily quiet (except for the Bobolinks!). Apparently they're moving south now!
This morning (Sep 2) a Veery was calling behind the house, but it was the
only migrant I could find here. Hopefully more will show up later this weekend!
Cheers!
