Howdy! I was all over southern MD as well this weekend- great time to be
outside. If mosquito bites build character, I'm late seventies John Travolta.
Friday, while my wife and kid were visiting with my mother-in-law (Anne
Bishop!), I sneaked down to Pt Lookout SP. After getting a pass at
headquarters to enter the campground, I headed over to the newly remodeled
marsh nature center and Periwinkle trail. At the trail head, there were 6-7
BROWN-HEADED NUTHATCHES squeaking. About 1/2 a mile down the Periwinkle
Trail at "Tulip Circle" there were two RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS flitting
around the pines. Everything else (less the ubiquitous Ospreys) was quiet
along that route.
I parked at the 30min POW camp turn-off and made a quick pass into the woods
where I found Common Yellowthroat, AMERICAN REDSTART, BLACK-THROATED BLUE,
BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLERS, an Ovenbird, and very raggedy Carolina Wren and
Cardinals.
The pylons by the lighthouse merely held a couple of Brown Pelicans, a DC
Cormorant and several Laughing Gulls. I missed the Lark Sparrow- I found out
about them too late.
North of Pt Lookout on Longneck Rd., there were seven AMERICAN KESTRELS
cruising the fields and power lines.
Saturday Fiona, Kermit and I took a walk at Elm's Beach. The pond is the
lowest I've seen in three years, and on the mudflats I spotted 6 KILLDEER, 2
SEMI PLOVERS, and 4 STILT SANDPIPERS...a very pleasant surprise.
I woke at 5:30 Sunday morning in Dameron, to the incessant hooting of a
GREAT-HORNED OWL and a BARRED OWL. Patty Craig, who lives nearby thought I
was playing tapes- she also heard a SCREECH OWL around the same time. It
wasn't a tape...I knew I should have stood outside a coupe of minutes longer!
After that, I rolled up to Bill Hubick's Calvert Cliffs jaunt mixed in with
a road trip for the SAY'S PHOEBE. --insert Bill's report here--
Nice to meet so many of you this weekend, and Happy Birding!
