Hughes Hollow and the Polo Grounds today. Early afternoon at the Polo
grounds we were unable to find either a Say’s Phoebe or a Golden Plover.
However, there were Killdeer in the fields north of the main entrance and group
of juvenile Brown-headed Cowbirds hanging around the Polo-ponies in the
paddock. These were flocking birds. At Hughes Hollow there were at least 14
Least Sandpipers, and a solitary Solitary Sandpiper, a juvenile, also Killdeer
now moving as a group. There was the apparently resident Great Egret and a
couple of Great Blues. There were also the numerous Green Herons and, and
this was the first time I had ever seen this, one erected a substantial black
crest, though only momentarily. I was unaware that these birds had this kind
of erectile crest and I’ve certainly seen enough Green Herons –especially this
year a Hughes Hollow. There was also a couple of Wood-Peewee at the
entrance to the impoundments dividing road and in the still watered part of the
east impoundment the male and female Wood-ducks in eclipse that have been
there for a while along with two Mallards. Found: nothing but common birds
but still very interesting birding.
