Hello all,
An update from my little corner of Sussex and Caroline Cos. Eagerly anticipating the goodies that a decent cold front would bring, I took off from work on Wednesday, 9/12. However, the warbler list was rather mundane with 7 species with only Blackpoll being of real interest. The others were Yellowthroat, Redstart, Palm, Prairie, B&W and Pine. Other birds of interest were a Vesper Sparrow and Scarlet Tanager. Having taken off one morning, I did not do the same on Thursday and I think I probably missed day 2 of a cold front that was better than day 1. Oh well.
On Saturday 9/15, I helped with the Caroline Co. Fall Count by covering the southern tip of Caroline Co. south of Houston Branch Rd. That mainly consisted of my usual area at Oak Grove, but also productive stops on Hickory Hill Rd and Wright Rd (a very active and diverse group along the RR in the woods to the SE of the road crossing). 50 species total for the count. 10 species of warbler included an imm. Cape May, Northern Waterthrush, BTB warb (1 male), Parula, B&W and Pine on my farm; a female BTG on Kinder Rd; an imm. Nashville on Wright Rd and Redstart everywhere. Also, a Solitary Sand. in the small pond on Oak Grove Rd, a Merlin zipped by on North Oak Grove Rd, a BG Gnat on Hickory Hill; Scarlet Tanager, Pewee, empid sp., RE Vireo, WE Vireo, YB Cuckoo in the group on Wright Rd. That weather was challenging with clouds, rain, then wind before it cleared, but persistence paid off (the Wright Rd group found about 12:30 PM). Returned home to find 500 Tree Swallows swarming over the fields that included 1 Barn and 2 Banks (late).
Since the front had not cleared in the morning, I wondered if the birds found were new arrivals or holdovers from Thursday. Birds that arrived Thursday may have been grounded by strong south winds on Friday and then the rain (???).
On Sunday 9/16, I wanted to try day 2 of this cold front as well. Turned out to be a substantially different group of birds with 51 species, but 15 different from the day before. 8 warbler species inc. Redstart, Yellowthroat, Palm, B&W, Pine, Yellow, Nashville, Parula. Also an interesting all yellow bird that may have been a Hooded, but I have not quite convinced myself of it yet. Other good birds were a Great Crested Fly, Red-breasted Nuthatch (the invasion finally made it here!), House Wren, Catbird, Brown Thrasher, Red-shouldered Hawk, Bald Eagle and Flicker (many of these fall returnees after being absent for the summer).
This morning, I had an Ovenbird, an imm. Cape May (probably the same bird), Palm and another very yellow bird (possibly a Hooded) in the yard. For those keeping the tally, the Oak Grove year list is at 140 species. A respectable showing, but a little behind since there had not been any good cold fronts until this week.

Good Birding,
