On Saturday morning I made a brief stop (8:20 - 9:40) at Middle
Patuxent EA in Howard County. As before, the resident birds
were quite active, but the migrants were sparse, although I never
got beyond the small field near the Trotter Road entrance. With
some persistance I came up with the following (all single birds):
Chimney Swift
Ruby-crowned Kinglet (my FOY)
Brown Thrasher
Black-throated Blue Warbler (FOF - a gorgeous male)
Yellow-rumped Warbler (FOF)
Black-throated Green Warbler
Prairie Warbler (immature)
Then I went on to various points in Carroll and Baltimore Counties.
My best bird was a COMMON RAVEN, which I saw soaring with
several Turkey Vultures west of the power lines in Soldiers Delight
NEA in Baltimore County. After I had been watching for several
minutes, one of the vultures spiraled down and seemed to "bump"
the raven (it was a little hard to tell, since they were easily half a
mile away), after which the raven went down behind a ridge and out
of sight. I also saw a Yellow-rumped Warbler at Soldiers Delight.
A great day to be out!
