We had an interesting mid-morning outing at Hughes Hollow in Montgomery
County, today, Sunday September 30. We saw a surprising number of first of
fall birds for us and for this location. Most interesting were two immature
White-crowned Sparrows (the Yellow Book shows arrivals as early as September
21, and, after searching the MDOsprey archives, I don't think anyone else
has yet reported these from Maryland this fall). We also had White-throated
Sparrows, Lincoln's Sparrows, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Yellow-Rumped Warblers,
and Purple Finches. Hughes Hollow continues to dry out with only small
patches of water left in the first impoundment on the West side and in the
one on the East side. As a result, we saw virtually no birds associated
with water or marsh other than a Great Blue Heron and a few Mallards. A
