This morning things were really hoppin' at Hughes Hollow in
Montgomery County (even though I showed up later than I
wanted to, about 8:20). The birds were so active, flying ahead
of me and diving into the underbrush, that I quickly gave up
any serious attempt to count most of them. The highlights
included the following:
Great Blue Heron - 1 flyover
Sharp-shinned Hawk - 1 (perched in dead tree)
Red-shouldered Hawk - 1 immature (flying over Hughes Road)
Red-headed Woodpecker - 2 (well-seen, end of the main dike)
Red-bellied Woodpecker - several heard
YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER - 1
Downy Woodpecker
Northern Flicker
Eastern Phoebe
Ruby-crowned Kinglet - 1
American Robin - 1
Northern Mockingbird
Brown Thrasher - 1
European Starling - 3
Magnolia Warbler - 1 (in trees along road)
Yellow-rumped Warbler - 3
Palm Warbler - many (adults and immatures)
Common Yellowthroat - many
Song Sparrow - many
LINCOLN'S SPARROW - 2 or 3 (my FOY)
Swamp Sparrow - several
WHITE-THROATED SPARROW - quite a few (my FOF)
Rose-breasted Grosbeak - 1 female
Indigo Bunting - 2 or 3
(plus the usual jays, catbirds, cardinals, chickadees, titmice,
wrens, and goldfiinches)
