This morning was my only chance to go out birding this whole weekend, and I
was torn with heading to Rock Creek or to try the Kenilworth sites in NE
(Kenilworth Park & Aquatic Gardens). Since it had been a while since I'd
been to the Kenilworths, I decided to go there. First stop was the Park,
where the best bird was a flyover AMERICAN PIPIT. Also present were
"Western" PALM WARBLERS, 2 SAVANNAH SPARROWS, AMERICAN KESTREL, 2
RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS, and a flyover INDIGO BUNTING. In the field was a RED
FOX that high-tailed it to the taller grass when it finally saw me. It was
quite birdy, though nothing more interesting than those listed above.

From there I went to the Aquatic Gardens, where it too was quite birdy.
Most common bird was RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD, with AMERICAN ROBIN in a close
second - there was a steady stream flying over all morning. A young
COOPER'S HAWK was playing with the blackbirds, and a young SHARPIE also made
an appearance. There were only 3 duck species - MALLARD, AM. BLACK DUCK and
WOOD DUCK. 5 GREAT EGRETS worked the marsh, a few YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS
passed through, and my first WHITE-THROATED SPARROW of the fall popped up
briefly from within the vines. Another INDIGO BUNTING also showed briefly.
Only other bird of note was HOUSE FINCH - I saw c.20-25 of these birds,
which was a nice concentration (one of the larger groupings in a while).

Good birding,
