Hi Everybody,

I swung out to Great Oak Pond to help Winger West and Marcy Stutzman
look for Ross's and Cackling geese late this afternoon. Geese were few
at 5:50 PM. As we watched the Snow Geese bleed away from the nearby corn
fields I heard the plaintive whistle of a Black-bellied Plover. The bird
came in leading a flock of 15 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS which swept around
the pond a few times and obligingly landed on the far (south) shore. The
birds eventually filtered into the northwestern corner of the pond
giving us closer looks as the evening fell into deepening dusk. An adult
eagle flushed the birds, who returned after a quick fly-around, allowing
us to compare flight calls as well as identify the birds by plumage and
shape. The big numbers of loafing geese (both Snows and Canadas and who
knows what else) today were at the pond at 2:30 PM as we gave the pond a
quick check before unsuccessfully trying to find the flycatcher at
Eastern Neck.

Good birding,

Walter Ellison
