Taking advantage of a day off (and needing a break from cleaning
house), I spent several hours in western Montgomery County and
southern Frederick County this afternoon. My first stop was at
Black Hill Regional Park. My best bird there was a single
AMERICAN TREE SPARROW, which I found foraging with some
Song Sparrows in the marshy area west of the boat ramp.
After that I went up to Lilypons Water Gardens, where I was stunned
to find a COMMON LOON, basically riding at anchor, in the largest
impoundment between the parking lot and the river. Since it was
the middle of the day, there wasn't a lot of bird activity. Besides
the usual suspects, I did manage to find two WINTER WRENS
(a year bird for me) behind the main building.
