I ran into Lydia Schindler and Linda Friedland at Lilypons, Frederick
County, midday today (where I completely missed the reported
Red-throated Loon) Fortunately for me, they passed on the news that
Dave Czaplak had reported two Red-throated Loons at Little Seneca
Reservoir, Montgomery County, just this morning.

I then drove over to Little Seneca and saw the two loons, which were
in full basic plumage -- i.e., extremely white -- almost exactly
where Dave had reported them, halfway between the Black Hill visitor
center and the Route 121 parking spot. This was only my second
record for this species in Montgomery, the other coming in late April 2005.

Nearby was a winter plumaged Horned Grebe, diving much more
frequently than the loons. Most of the other water birds around were
Bufflehead or Ruddy Duck. A few Coot and Pied-billed Grebes rounded
things out.
