Like so many others, I had a steady presence of pine siskins, and an unusual number of goldfinches for a couple of weeks. It started with one or two siskins, then 5 or 6, and continued to grow. My usual neighborhood of 8-12 goldfinches was also growing rapidly. By the time the numbers reached 15-20 siskins and 35 or more goldfinches -- at one point there were 15 goldfinches feeding on the ground because the 4 feeders were hover-room only -- I went and bought an additional thistle feeder, thinking we would be hosting this explosion of guests for the winter. Suddenly, they seem to be gone. For the last couple of days, my neighborhood has shrunk back to the usual dozen or less goldfinches. And not one siskin to be seen. 'Course, with the extra feeder, the finches can really spread out now, and don't have to argue over seating. But, has anyone else seen the unusual numbers drop away? any ideas why?
Hope everyone out there enjoys this thank-full day. ss
